Mark Verwoert: My name is Mark, I am one of the founders and the CEO of Dry Skinz Naturals. Dry Skinz is a natural skincare brand focused on dry sensitive skin. I’ve always had dry skin and it can be a total pain in the behind…
I was looking for a solution that didn’t contain nasty chemicals like parabens, sulfates, etc. I couldn’t find it. That’s why I decided to create Dry Skinz as a natural solution to this problem.
Besides my work, I love to walk with our Swiss Shepherd through nature. And I am a huge book worm, I love to constantly learn and expand my knowledge.*
If you were in an elevator with Warren Buffett, how would you describe your company, your services or products? What makes your company different from others? What is your company’s biggest strength?
Mark Verwoert: Our biggest strength is that we are audience focused rather than product focused. What do I mean? We are there for everyone with dry sensitive skin issues. When you suffer from something, you want an expert to fix your problem.
You wouldn’t go to the hairdresser if your back was hurting, would you? There are many generic brands but not a lot of brands that focus on issues and become experts in that field.
Dry Skinz is the expert in dry sensitive skin. We create products that our customers ask of us rather than create a product and go looking for customers.
What advice do you wish you had received when you started your business journey and what do you intend on improving in the next quarter?
Mark Verwoert: Opportunity costs. Momentum is key in building a business. It’s OK if your product or service isn’t perfect yet. Just get it out there and improve it along the way.
The best learning is from doing the deed and hearing real feedback from customers. Fail quickly, succeed quickly.
Online business keeps on surging higher than ever, B2B, B2C, online shopping, virtual meetings, remote work, Zoom medical consultations, what are your expectations for the year to come and how are you capitalizing on the tidal wave?
Mark Verwoert: As an e-commerce brand, we are definitely riding the tidal wave of online business. It’s accessibility above all, to be honest. You get access to so many products from different countries.
This will only become more mainstream as time progresses. E-commerce shops are breaking records for years and that proves that it isn’t a one-time thing.
There will always be place for traditional stores and the like, the business landscape will just become more diverse with online focused businesses as well as traditional stores.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
Mark Verwoert: The real challenge for this business is to drive attention to it. People are getting more and more competition for their attention.
It requires a smart and creative answer if your pockets aren’t filled with cash to spend tons on online advertising. But at the end of the day, it’s a good filter for the business landscape as only the businesses with true value will continue to exist.
In your experience, what tends to be the most underestimated part of running a company? Can you share an example?
Mark Verwoert: Margins. I’ve seen it as a digital marketeer so often. People want to spend marketing budget on products that barely have any margins.
This is simply impossible because you need to drive a net revenue at the end of the day. The lower your margins are, the most difficult you make it yourself to market your product and brand. This is the first and most important aspect of your business model.
On a lighter note, if you had the ability to pick any business superpower, what would it be and how would you put it into practice?
Mark Verwoert: Feeling rested like you would after a good night’s sleep, but permanently. It would mean I could read, build the business, invest more and more without the limitations of brain power.
As it is, you do have energy flows and that’s why every entrepreneur should learn when your optimal work time is. It makes all the difference in your productivity.
