Justin Heilman: Justin Heilman is a co-founder and the CEO of Lyfe Blends. He has 24 years of education and experience in the human nutrition and wellness space. Justin focuses on three main pillars of wellness to create real change: nutrition, activity levels, and proper supplementation. These are the foundational keys to high-level success in human transformation. He co-founded Lyfe Blends to continue in entrepreneurship his true passion and to bring nutrition products to consumers worldwide.
You are a successful entrepreneur, so we’d like your view point, do you believe entrepreneurs are born or made? Explain.
Justin Heilman: Life truly makes you who you are. From the influence of your family, your community, your personal world makes you. I would not be who or where I am today without the influence of my family, friends, and my community. There is a saying “it takes a village, to raise a child”. I could not take credit for who I am without the amazing influence to become from friends, family, and community. I would simply answer by saying entrepreneurs are definitely made.
If you were asked to describe yourself as an entrepreneur in a few words, what would you say?
Justin Heilman: Passionate, creative, and observant.
Tell us about what your company does and how did it change over the years?
Justin Heilman: Lyfe Blends has designed a line of wellness supplements and performance food products to support the ever-changing lifestyles and landscape of our busy society. We have selected a wide variety of ingredients, including patented products, to ensure consumers get the highest level of wellness support possible.
Things are rapidly changing with an emphasis on health issues during these challenging times with the COVID-19 pandemic. Lyfe Blends is positioning to become the go-to in health supplementation and performance products.
Thank you for all that. Now for the main focus of this interview. With close to 11.000 new businesses registered daily in the US, what must an entrepreneur assume when starting a business?
Justin Heilman: They must assume that there is a war going on on small businesses. We must stand together and stand strong to allow the freedom of entrepreneurship to thrive and stay alive. These are our livelihoods, the ways in wyhich we take care of our families. Corporate jobs may not be the best for each person and the ability and freedom to take an idea and grow it into a product or service is incredible. It literally is your baby. You watch it grow and it is as healthy as you can support it. You get what you give to it. That’s an incredible feeling to be able to be in charge of your own destiny.
Did you make any wrong assumptions before starting a business that you ended up paying dearly for?
Justin Heilman: Never assuming that my success is someone else’s responsibility. I have to keep that in mind every day due to some hard life lessons.
If you could go back in time to when you first started your business, what advice would you give yourself and why? Explain.
Justin Heilman: That my hard work will pay off. Keep moving forward. Stay positive. Just overall motivation when things get tedious and you want to give up. Never give up and keep going!
What is the worst advice you received regarding running a business and what lesson would you like others to learn from your experience?
Justin Heilman: The worst advice I received would be that it is too many health products already in the market. You have to trust your instincts and continue to move forward, Focus is key.
In your opinion, how has COVID-19 changed what entrepreneurs should assume before starting a business? What hasn’t changed?
Justin Heilman: Digital is the strongest option we have to reach a national and global audience. Brink-and-motor is just not going to be the norm. We have to be ready to go and be digital.
What is a common myth about entrepreneurship that aspiring entrepreneurs and would-be business owners believe in? What advice would you give them?
Justin Heilman: Always keep an eye on your books! The numbers are important and won’t go away because you ignore them. You have to watch your budget while investing in yourself.
What traits, qualities, and assumptions do you believe are most important to have before starting a business?
Justin Heilman: Tenacity, integrity, customer service, love.
How can aspiring leaders prepare themselves for the future challenges of entrepreneurship? Are there any books, websites, or even movies to learn from?
Justin Heilman: Education is always the key to freedom. Information is power. Get as much information about what you are interested in as possible. Listen to thought-leaders in the field you need to know. Attend seminars either virtual or in-person (if it is safe). Read books, magazines, and blogs. Take classes. Do whatever it takes to answer your questions and gain knowledge. There is a saying “knowledge is power”.
You have shared quite a bit of your wisdom and our readers thank you for your generosity but would also love to know: If you could choose any job other than being an entrepreneur, what would it be?
Justin Heilman: Community organizer.
Thank you so much for your time, I believe I speak for all of our readers when I say that this has been incredibly insightful. We do have one more question: If you could add anyone to Mount Rushmore, but not a politician, who would it be; why?
Justin Heilman: I would add Mother Teresa.
