We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
Ryan Paulson: I’m the chief editor at IRAEmpire.com. I have helped thousands of US citizens successfully secure their retirement funds through precious metals, cryptocurrencies and 401k accounts. My partners and I started IRAEmpire as a one-stop solution for finding the best retirement investments.
Before this, I worked as an independent retirement advisor and many of my clients wanted alternatives to the traditional IRAs. I aim to help out people who are looking to recession-proof their retirement savings.
We received our seed funding of $50,000 from a private group of investors, who saw great potential in our platform. Currently, we have 15 full-time employees, who work out of our office in Sheridan, Wyoming.
In the past year, what is the greatest business achievement you’d like to celebrate with your team? Please share the details of that success.
Ryan Paulson: For me, the greatest achievement of our team was when we first received an email thanking us for helping them choose the best investment option for them.
It helped us push forward with our mission of putting people over profits. In my opinion, you cannot measure every success in numbers; sometimes, the positive impact we have on others is more valuable than a check.
Quiet quitting, The Great Resignation, are an ongoing trend causing many businesses to struggle keeping talent engaged and motivated. Most are leaving because of their boss or their company culture. 82% of people feel unheard, undervalued and misunderstood in the workplace. In your experience, what keeps employees happy? And how are adapting to the current shift we see?
Ryan Paulson: The biggest reason why employees quit silently is when they are treated like robots. I’ve seen many organizations where they claim to treat their employees like family but don’t even know their birthdays.
At IRAEmpire we are very close to all our employees. I have a tradition of celebrating everyone’s birthday lavishly, it helps in boosting morale and ensures that everyone realizes how valuable they are to the business.
It’s also important to pay your employees first and yourself later. Recently, new entrepreneurs focus on paying themselves first and their employees are a second thought. This culture is very toxic and leads to high employee turnover.
At the end of the day, you need to treat people like people, and not machines. It’s that simple.
Here is a two fold question: What is the book that influenced you the most and how? Please share some life lessons you learned. Now what book have you gifted the most and why?
Ryan Paulson: The book that influenced me the most is Atomic Habits by James Clear. After reading it, I took a step back and analyzed how I spend my day. What I thought were “busy days” were simply “distracted days”. Since then I’ve gifted it to all my employees and even close friends.
The book changed the way I looked at time management and goals. I struggled with stress management and time scheduling but the principles in Atomic Habits helped a lot. This is my favourite quote from the book:
“Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement”
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
Ryan Paulson: The biggest challenge for financial publications is providing actual unbiased content. Most of our competitors publish extremely biased reviews and reports. Truth should always be the priority when it comes to publishing content on the internet, especially for financial publications.
Chat GPT 4.0 is also interesting, as I’ve seen people actually ask Chat GPT for financial advice, and personally, I would not trust AI for financial advice.
In your experience, what tends to be the most underestimated part of running a company? Can you share an example?
Ryan Paulson: Making and following a company culture has to be the most underestimated part of running a successful company.
When I started IRAEmpire I did not realize how difficult and important it is to create a culture at your company. Once I implemented a productivity-focused culture, we saw massive growth at the company.
What does “success” in the year to come mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
Ryan Paulson: I want to expand IRAEmpire and start covering broader financial topics on our platform. We’re planning on adding an exclusive section for financial advisors, where users can find and compare financial advisors near them. I also plan on going on a trip to Italy with my wife.
She has been my bedrock through out my business journey. I couldn’t have made IRAEmpire what it is today, without her support.
