We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company
Risa Arin: Hi. I’m Risa Arin, Founder & CEO of XpertPatient.com, a next-gen website intricately designed to educate and empower people new to a cancer diagnosis, an approach proven again and again to drive better health outcomes as well as reduce overall healthcare costs.
As an innovative marketer, my passion has always been to create ground-breaking brand experiences for my customers but personally something was always missing for me. Now I have definitely filled that gap.
Having the amazing opportunity to partner with cancer patients, caregivers, advocates and health innovators to create something literally called “remarkable” leaves me speechless. Building a profitable business for good has left me and I hope others truly inspired.
Our personalized education experience uniquely integrates leading-edge technologies, including Ai, with proven Cx and adult learning strategies to ensure complex information recall and sharing.
Every element of the site has been designed to help visitors better understand their diagnosis, compare the latest treatment options, and quickly take back control of their lives.
Fueling our immediate growth is sponsorship by oncology-related brands and advocacy organizations looking for innovative ways to reach these communities. In 2024, we will be launching additional next-gen products and services.
In the past year, what is the greatest business achievement you’d like to celebrate with your team? Please share the details of that success.
Risa Arin: With the passion and commitment of our Strategy, UX & technology teams and incredible patient, caregiver and advocacy support behind us, in less than 6-months, we launched XpertPatient.com, a next-gen website that offers a new level of support for 90% of the newly diagnosed cancer community.
Hands down our most amazing achievement is the site and the feedback we receive from our visitors. Even if we help each person be a little more confident during this challenging time, it is a win for us to celebrate.
Secondly and incredibly, I’d like to celebrate with my team the outstanding industry recognition we have received within a year of launch. First by PM360 Most Innovative Start-up of 2022 and 3 months later winning a 2023 Stevie Award, Start Up of the Year for Consumer Services.
What advice do you wish you had received when you started your business journey and what do you intend on improving in the next quarter?
Risa Arin: You always know that things aren’t going to go as planned but wow, the twists and turns along a new business journey are really just incredible. I wish I knew the extent of the challenges that a new business faces, especially one breaking all of the norms.
With that advice from the get-go, I could have game-planned different scenarios as part of my planning process even if it extended time to launch.
I have an incredibly exciting roadmap ahead which I”m sure will run into some hurdles. As I push to expand the business next quarter and beyond, this type of “what-if” approach will definitely be in the mix to ensure all of our goals are achieved.
Here is a two-fold question: What is the book that influenced you the most and how? Please share some life lessons you learned. Now what book have you gifted the most and why?
Risa Arin: The Tipping Point was definitely an incredibly influential book for me when I first started out professionally and has recently become even more influential as I work to change the mindset of the US consumers when it comes to their health.
I recently joked that we need to invest in a Public Service Announcements that literally screams “Empowered Patients, Better Results” to change everyone’s health behavior.
Much more impactful would be if I could find the few critical pieces that need to come together to create a “Tipping Point”, then we could really change create a massive mindset change once and for all.
It is so interesting to me that we all spend so much time comparing cars, investments, even phones before making a buying decision, but when it comes to our own health, the majority of us are not active participants in the treatment decision.
Finding a way to “Tip” the scale, we could literally improve health outcomes across the board while reducing the overall cost of healthcare in the US.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
Risa Arin: The real challenge for a new business today is to not just come up with a compelling business proposition but to also break through to prospects that are being bombarded with 5-10,000 ads per day often challenging their offering.
The vast number of in-market products and services in most categories makes gaining traction and a strong growth trajectory more challenging than ever for new companies. Identifying innovative marketing strategies often including unexpected partnerships is absolutely critical to long term success.
In your experience, what tends to be the most underestimated part of running a company? Can you share an example?
Risa Arin: Running XpertPatient, I have found that one of the biggest challenges is keeping all of my team members and partners motivated and 100% focused on working to achieve our immediate goal, empower as many patients as possible so they can achieve their best treatment results.
This challenge actually became front and center very early on when I was approached by an incredible partner to deploy a 100% voice-activated version of XpertPatient.
But while the innovation factor would be amazing, I quickly realized that taking on this effort wouldn’t help us reach more people new to cancer and if anything slow down development of our core product by requiring a time and resource investment.
What does “success” in 2023 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
Risa Arin: My goal for 2023 of course is to help as many newly diagnosed cancer patients and caregivers as possible become more educated and confident in conversations with their treatment team from the start of their cancer journey.
To the business community and aspiring entrepreneurs, In 2023 I want to prove that a highly successful business “for good” is possible. While not always easy, and there will be definitely be many doubters, with the right vision, team and support network, incredible things are possible.
Today, XpertPatient.com sets a new gold standard for cancer patient education, but ultimately, my mission is to help build a society where being an active health consumer is the norm. Expected.
That bold vision of course isn’t going to happen in 2023, but we are laying the foundation for a new way of thinking that would be an incredible win for everyone. Each of us will have a better chance to live the healthiest life possible and as an economy we are likely to see a significant decrease in the the overall cost of healthcare.
