We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
Campbell Tourgis: Hi! My name is Campbell Tourgis, Executive VP & Chief Operating Officer at Wainbee, one of the largest industrial distributors in Canada.
We provide motion & control, automation, and industrial filtration solutions for multiple industries. I’ve been with the company for 27 years.
How has the significance of networking evolved over the past decades?
Campbell Tourgis: Networking has evolved significantly over the decades due to technological advancements and changing societal practices. It began with ARPANET in the 1960s, mainly for researchers and the military.
The 1980s brought the internet’s emergence, allowing broader access and basic online communication. The 1990s commercialized the Internet, leading to e-commerce and the dot-com boom. Subsequent years introduced social networking, mobile networking, and cloud computing. The rise of smartphones and the IoT generated vast data.
COVID-19 accelerated remote work and heightened cybersecurity concerns. The ongoing rollout of 5G and research into advanced networking technologies continue to shape the evolving significance of networking in our lives.
Can you share a personal story where one networking interaction led to unexpected doors opening, and how it highlights the ripple effect of networking?
Campbell Tourgis: In 2021, networking was a real challenge since digital presence had replaced physical face-to-face interactions and events. I met one of Scandiweb’s sales managers in the virtual space through a keynote webinar session.
At that time, our products only had 10% online visibility, and this single networking opportunity paved the way for our company to seek help from real experts to strengthen our product information management.
Scandiweb set our e-commerce platform with a Magento-Pimcore structure, enabling us to bring 100% of our products online and manage everything within Pimcore for sales boosts.
What are some common networking mistakes people make, and how can they pivot to turn potential missteps into learning experiences?
Campbell Tourgis: Neglecting virtual events and digital networking platforms can limit your networking opportunities, especially in the contemporary digital age. Online networking has become increasingly important as it offers several advantages.
It provides a global reach, allowing you to connect with individuals from around the world, eliminating geographical constraints. Diverse opportunities are available through virtual events, webinars, and forums that cater to various industries and interests, broadening the scope of networking.
How do you see the future of networking evolving with the rise of AI, VR, and other technologies?
Campbell Tourgis: AI will be instrumental in creating highly personalized networking experiences in virtual events, with tailored recommendations for connections and sessions based on attendee profiles and interests.
VR and AR (Augmented Reality) will introduce immersive elements, enabling participants to engage in 3D environments, interact with virtual trade show booths, and foster more interactive and profound connections.
AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants will facilitate seamless communication, offering assistance, answering queries, and streamlining networking interactions.
