TJ Boyce – recording artist, songwriter, filmmaker, producer, and “dad-ager” TJ Boyce II is not only pursuing his dreams as the founder and CEO of ABDU Entertainment but is making the dreams come true for his two young children. Boyce has been a quiet force behind many projects, writing and producing for various artists. He’s worked with lots of music heavyweights including Sean “P. Diddy/ Puffy” Combs, Dr. Dre, Scarface, and Trae tha Truth, just to name a few.
But when he saw the talent in his son, he did what most parents would do – he placed 100% focus on his child.

Let’s learn a little about you and really get to experience what makes us tick – starting at our beginnings. Where did your story begin?
TJ Boyce: My story begin growing up as a preacher’s kid in Houston and moving to Midland , TX in my teens. I returned to Houston to attend Texas Southern University where I began honing in on my musical talents and entrepreneurial spirit. It’s amazing to see the foundation that I have set in rubbing off on my children who are entrepreneurs and emerging “movers and shakers” in television and film.
Can you tell us a story about the hard times that you faced when you first started your journey? Did you ever consider giving up?
TJ Boyce: Yes as an African American entrepreneur, I had several instances where I wanted to give up simply from fear. Fear of not knowing, fear of am I making the right decision as a man, husband, and father I allowed my mistakes to become teachable moments where I have grown. I also serve as a mentor to budding entrepreneurs of color, and make sure my children are around me to learn the ropes
What are the most common mistakes you see entrepreneurs make and what would you suggest they do?
TJ Boyce: Most entrepreneurs are afraid to ask for help. They feel they can do it all. Most have the vision but need to seek out mentorship, and not be afraid to contract staff who have the necessary skills for the business to thrive. (Ex: Contract a good accountant/bookkeeper to assist with accounting needs)
Has the pandemic and transitioning into mostly online shopping affected your company positively or negatively?
TJ Boyce: As a filmmaker and musician the pandemic has actually helped my business positively as more people are working from home and can view my films and musical projects. I not can get immediate feedback on social media since most have their smart phone in their hand all day. I have also been able to hone in more on my children’s careers, where I was able to travel with my son on his feature with Disney this summer as well.
In your opinion, what makes your company stand out from the competition?
TJ Boyce: ABDU Entertainment stands out because we hire and train from the community. When most are outsourcing talent from LA or Hollywood we are nurturing local talent in front and behind the scenes. Also, my company has a passion for the community. Currently, I am looking to bring Hollywood to Houston by creating a sound stage in an underserved community. This entertainment complex will bring forth economic development, jobs, and a creative space for local talent.
You are a successful business leader. Which three character traits do you think were most instrumental to your success?
TJ Boyce: Three character traits
- Being accountable and holding your team accountable
- Lead by example
- Actively listen to your team and seek feedback (good or bad).
Being a CEO of the company, do you think that your personal brand reflects your company’s values?
TJ Boyce: Your personal brand does reflect your company’s values. Remaining consistent and having integrity is so important in a very fickle and competitive market. As a filmmaker and musician, I am relying on word of mouth to drive interest and revenue to maintaining my personal brand is critical
How would you define “leadership”?
TJ Boyce: Leadership is leading by example and remaining consistent. Your team, staff, and community are watching so modeling this critical trait is imperative. Leadership is also about taking risks, hitting challenges head on, and addressing tough questions. Effective leaders are also great coaches and mentors who are constantly developing the next generation to go farther.
What advice would you give to our younger readers that want to become entrepreneurs?
TJ Boyce: I would say don’t be so hard on your self. Let your failures motivate you. Take the time out to read and really become knowledgeable. Surround yourself with positive people and mentors, and lastly always have a financial game plan in your playbook.
What’s your favorite “life lesson” quote and how has it affected your life?
TJ Boyce: “You have to stay ready so you don’t have to get ready’. To me, this means I have to be ready for anything, have my game face on, and be ready to execute.
