I sat down with Ali to get the inside scoop about what the last 40 years of life have taught him. The conversation was insightful, meaningful, and profound. Come along and dive into my marvelous discussion with the immensely clever Solomon RC Ali to discover his simple-yet-powerful thinking about success and engaging thoughts about life in general.
Solomon’s Picks: More Than a Resource
Ali has helped hundreds of people grow their money from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, I had to dive right in and hear from the man himself what it feels like to be able to help so many people create the one thing everyone wants: Financial freedom.
“It’s an awesome thing to know that you’ve been able to help someone else,” he shared. “It’s a rush! It’s a true rush. When I started in this field, I didn’t understand the power. What I mean by that is I just thought I was doing a job. On the surface, that is what I was doing, but the immense impact of what doing that job had on others was so much more than I ever realized. Being able to make a positive change in other peoples’ lives is an amazing thing.”
When we think about the finance space, it can be easy to think of someone who is ‘all about the numbers,’ but that couldn’t be farther from the truth with Mr. Ali. While yes, he is results-focused, he seems to get genuine joy from being able to grow other peoples’ money pots.
When I relayed as much to him, here is what he said in response:
“You know, when you get to do something that you truly enjoy, that you love doing, AND you get to embrace helping other people — and helping them by making their money come back with friends — that’s pretty cool. It’s pretty special.”
So fitting — and ‘making their money come back with friends’ is now my new favorite phrase.
Uplifting Others
Being able to uplift others usually comes from being uplifted in the past by someone ourselves. Ali is no different. When we came to this topic, he responded without hesitation.
“My mother, Vivian Mann, was a huge inspiration to me,” he said. “I don’t think I’d be where I am today without her influence, without her and my dad telling me, ‘You can do it.’ Or, ‘It doesn’t matter what you do, just be the best at it. Never quit.’ With that same drive, I went into sports. And then the same drive pushed me into the military. So, my mother basically created a foundation of, ‘Don’t quit. Never give up. Overcome,’ that pushed me through every stage of my life.”
To anyone reading this that may be comparing themselves and their current situation to Ali, remember that he has over 37 years of experience in the financial industry. His success did not happen overnight. Challenges came, and he pushed through.
Persistence is crucial if any of us want to succeed, be it in finance or any other area of our lives. Author Gretchen Rubin, of The Happiness Project, said, ‘What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while.’ It’s true, there is no ‘magic pill’ or ‘get rich quick’ scheme. It’s about putting in the work, day after day.
Ali said, “You know, in life you will face some challenges, and it is important to adapt, adjust, and keep moving forward. That is the big thing my mother taught me. What I’ve done, with her guidance, is to continuously — no matter what I’ve been faced with or what I have to deal with — get back up. If it pushes me down, I get back up and do it again. And again. And again. Until I win. That drive was instilled in me from her.”
When I posed the question to Mr. Ali, seeking his wisdom to impart to the younger generation, his response struck a profound chord. However, it’s worth contemplating the irony that accompanies such discussions, as the age-old adage goes: ‘Youth is wasted on the young!’
As the conversation unfolded, it became evident that Ali’s insights carried valuable lessons born out of experience and reflection:
“As kids, you know, we don’t look at the influence that people, especially our parents, have on us in a self-aware way. When we’re young we don’t understand how our parents are trying to mold us based on their own experiences. So I’ve been doing a lot of reflection lately. And reflecting back on my life, I can see the pattern: Everywhere that I was successful, be it sports, business, the military, were because of the things she said. Words matter.”
Closing Reflections
Words certainly do matter. In closing, Solomon RC Ali asks us to be a beacon of confidence and belief in the people around us. Whether that be a young person, our own child, a friend, a spouse. We might not have the multitude of experience and power that Ali does, but we can make a difference.
“One success brought the next. Along the way if I got recognition for my work or performance it built up more and more confidence in me and gave me the ability to go a little further. So I’d say that my mother’s confidence in me was the first building block in that pattern. We all have the power to be someone else’s confidence until they get going.”
