"I built the company to make sure that artists are being treated fairly and that they have a say in how their brand is publicized."
Jacqueline Best Tweet
Fuelled by her burning passion for music, Predominant Studios’ CEO, Jacqueline Best, has been forging a career in the industry since her youth. From a young age, she was a vocalist who enjoyed playing clarinet and various percussion instruments, but poor health, unfortunately, prevented her from pursuing her ambition to become a singer.
Her talent and passion for music still propelled her to pursue a career in the business, and she consequently founded Predominant Studios; a record-label firm, to help musicians follow their dreams.
She launched Predominant last year and since then, her company has gained more artists, growing its roster by 85% in just a year.
Her company has been assisting talented musicians through creating fair contracts, music business consultations, and career coaching.
They have also signed 17 artists and serviced 45 independent artists expecting many more to come.
Their artists have also been featured in All Hip-hop, Rap Castle, American Reporter, and California Herald.

We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
Jacqueline Best: My name is Jacqueline Best. I am the CEO of Predominant Studios, Canada’s newest Independent music label, and Global Music Group. I come from a musical background. I have 5 children and have worked extremely hard to get here with Predominant.
Predominant was born with fairness and equality for artists first and foremost. I built the company to make sure that artists are being treated fairly and that they have a say in how their brand is publicized. We became very popular within a short amount of time due to our simple business processes.
We encourage all artists to reach out, no matter the following, no matter the genre, and no matter where you are in the world. We mentor all artists and work to unleash their maximum potential.
Unlike others, our recording contracts prioritize the individual, the artist. Our fair contracts set us apart. We guarantee you won’t find a better deal and a more supportive label to support you.
If you were in an elevator with Warren Buffett, how would you describe your company, your services, or your products? What makes your company different from others? What is your company’s biggest strength?
Jacqueline Best: I would tell him “Predominant is here to change the game, our company makes sure that artists’ rights come first, and we hope other labels will follow.
What advice do you wish you received when you started your business journey and what do you intend on improving in the next quarter?
Jacqueline Best: I wished that the music industry wasn’t so negative. Integrity is crucial in this industry, many seem to be lacking what’s right. If you’re not careful, people will take money and deliver nothing.
We intend on improving our A&R (what is this as most readers won’t know?) department and launching our e-commerce store.
Online business keeps on surging higher than ever, B2B, B2C, online shopping, virtual meetings, remote work, Zoom medical consultations, what are your expectations for the year to come and how are you capitalizing on the tidal wave?
Jacqueline Best: We are currently improving our website and building our e-commerce so that our fans can easily buy things from the artists they love and our company merchandise. Our store also offers independent artists’ services as well.
I believe that the opening of our store for merchandise and independent artist services will help increase sales.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
Jacqueline Best: The digital era is extremely difficult to monetize. Streaming companies don’t pay artists much unless, of course, you blow up. This is a challenge for all artists and record companies.
In your experience, what tends to be the most underestimated part of running a company? Can you share an example?
Jacqueline Best: Micro-managing teams are difficult with remote work. Make sure everyone is working while you pay wages etc Often time productivity doesn’t add up to the paycheck. I find since Covid this has been hard to manage internationally.
On a lighter note, if you had the ability to pick any business superpower, what would it be and how would you put it into practice?
Jacqueline Best: The ability to change the streaming laws and artist payout. I truly believe artists aren’t being paid fairly, which trickles down the line to all that work for them. Artist royalties are not much but the streaming platforms are making it huge. I would start a music petition to the governments in charge to change this and do what’s right for artists for streaming.
You are one of a few female CEOs in the music industry. How did you get into this competitive business?
Jacqueline Best: I got into this competitive industry as most of the people that surround me are in music that includes producers, singers, songwriters, etc. I myself sung for years, and I love the music industry but it’s not for the faint of heart.
So much has changed in the music industry in past years, have you had to take special measures.
As a new company, we have certainly had to implement things to make it run to fit the current market. Being so new, there are always areas to improve or to change things. We will forever be adapting to the constant changes. The new Canadian radio laws (November 2022) were a big blow to Canadian independent musicians and the biggest upset to all in the music business in Canada in the recent few years. We are still navigating this change.
Jerome Knyszewski, VIP Contributor to ValiantCEO and the host of this interview would like to thank Jacqueline Best for taking the time to do this interview and share her knowledge and experience with our readers.
