Thank you so much for giving us your time! Before we begin, could you introduce yourself to our readers and take us through what exactly your company does and what your vision is for its future?
Zhe L. Scott: My name is Zhe Scott, and I love what I do. My company helps businesses get more clients and revenue through the power of SEO, website design, and mobile app development. Before I was able to build this team I sought to contribute input to other agencies and move up into leadership positions. However, I was told to sit in the corner and do my job, and I was not cool with that.
So my vision for The SEO Queen is to be a place where The SEO Queen team and clients that we serve can be their best without any encumbrances. We embrace 360 degrees of contribution and feedback from team members and clients. We are a very data-driven yet empathetic corporation.
NO child ever says I want to be a CEO/entrepreneur when I grow up. What did you want to be and how did you get where you are today?
Zhe L. Scott: I wanted to be an entertainment industry attorney. It wasn’t until I met my company’s Intellectual property attorney that I really understood what I missed out on by pursuing tech and SEO at MIT and beyond.
Tell us something about yourself that others in your organization might be surprised to know.
Zhe L. Scott: I love to cross-stitch. It is something that I find very relaxing.
Many readers may wonder how to become an entrepreneur but what is an entrepreneur? How would you define it?
Zhe L. Scott: An entrepreneur is someone who can make something out of nothing. An extremely creative yet detailed and strategic individual.
You have to understand how to get along with people, be a master of your craft, and also have the wisdom to find the help you need when you need it. Money does not buy everything that you need to be successful. You have to be able to mentally shift gears and multitask daily until you are big enough to hire someone else to do that thing. I am still offloading some of my hats.
What is the importance of having a supportive and inclusive culture?
Zhe L. Scott: An inclusive culture is in the very essence of The SEO Queen. This is extremely important. We have had drag queens as clients, many LGBTQA clients, black clients, and more. THIS is why I started The SEO Queen. As a Black Woman with three degrees, 2 of which are from Massachusetts Institute of Technology I knew I was sick and tired of racism when a white man with a high school diploma became my boss. In a world that really follows meritocracy instead of giving it lip service, I would have been considered for leadership positions, but I was not.
I, unlike my father, had no stomach for navigating the corporate ladder in the midst of racism after all I had sacrificed academically. Watching my alumni friends start and launch and sell businesses inspired me to do it for myself, and I wanted an inclusive culture above all.
How can a leader be disruptive in the post covid world?
Zhe L. Scott: Solve problems. I just went to Same Day Health yesterday for a Covid Test, and I was amazed at how they created an environment that was not like the typical doctor’s office. Thinking outside of the box and doing things differently is the only way to be disruptive.
Also just doing the work. Most people are lazy and cut corners. You can disrupt just by doing an amazing job at what you are doing.
If a 5-year-old asked you to describe your job, what would you tell them?
Zhe L. Scott: My son is 7 and he already understands that I help business owners make money and grow their presence online. In fact, we just bought his first domain and he is gearing up to launch his own brand. Young people are smart. So smart, and my 7-year-old reminds me of this every day. As a single mom, he watches me from the beginning and he understands that I help businesses get more traffic and revenue from their websites.
Share with us one of the most difficult decisions you had to make for your company that benefited your employees or customers. What made this decision so difficult and what were the positive impacts?
Zhe L. Scott: One of the most difficult decisions that I had to make was whether or not I would pay myself and what I would pay myself. I am committed to a compensation structure that allows the company to grow and I am on my own entrepreneurial journey and I can’t compensate my team and others like other companies do. I have to stick to my values. It was hard not paying myself for many years. However, it was worth it because my company is now in a great position for growth.
Leaders are usually asked about their most useful qualities but let’s change things up a bit. What is your most useless talent?
Zhe L. Scott: Cross stitching.
Thank you so much for your time but before we finish things off, we do have one more question. If you wrote a book about your life until today, what would the title be?
Zhe L. Scott: ‘Black Brilliant and Maybe Bipolar’
