Project Manager

If you’ve ever tried to find the right person for the job, you already know how difficult it can be.

Finding the right skills and experiences alone can be frustrating. But finding a person with the right attitude and personality can be even more important than their skillset.

Project manager skills are crucial, of course. But they won’t matter much if you can’t find someone that fits with your team. If you’re responsible for hiring new talent, it’s important to have an eye for the right skills and an ear for the right attitude.

Here’s a look at a few project management skills and ways to identify the right attitude to match the position.

Communication

They must understand the project’s scope, identify potential gaps in the plan or schedule, and develop solutions.

Resource management, budgeting, and time-management skills are also important since they must manage more than just the actual project. They should be able to monitor progress and make sure the project moves along on time and budget.

Leadership

They should be organized and have a clear plan of action for completing a project from start to finish. They should be good problem solvers who can think on their feet to handle unexpected problems and keep the project on track. They should be able to inspire their team and promote hard work and creativity.

Motivation

A motivated and good project manager is essential for any project’s success—they motivate team members to work hard to their full potential, break through any roadblocks, and make sacrifices to get the job done. Good motivation skills consist of a combination of empathy, creative problem-solving, and communication.

Active Listening

When hiring a project manager, active listening should majorly affect your skills evaluation. Active listening is utilizing all senses to demonstrate that you are truly listening and understanding what the other person is expressing.

Active listeners ask probing questions to understand the message better, verbalize their understanding of it, and clarify it with the speaker. Project managers should also show empathy to understand the expressed sentiments better.

Negotiation

A project manager needs to be able to negotiate with all stakeholders to agree on what should be done for the project and how it should be implemented. If you want to hire a project manager, they should be able to recognize when to accept or reject an offer and be comfortable doing so.

A project manager is a great job to have. So, if you want to learn more, you can take this PMI scheduling professional training.
