We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
John Maldonado: Thanks for having me on today, Jed!
Well, I was born and raised in Georgia, so of course I am a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan– Go Dawgs! I am the youngest of 5 siblings; all of them being sisters and come from a long line of artisan wood-workers. My grandparents from both my mother an father’s sides did wood-working.
My great-grandfather was a master carpenter. I’ve always admired my father and his ability to create things. He’s always taught me a lot about how things work and the right and wrong way to go about building.
I try and keep this passion for my trade and in maintaining its integrity top-of-mind, always.
What advice do you wish you had received when you started your business journey and what do you intend on improving in the next quarter?
John Maldonado: Seize every opportunity to have a conversation with someone new each day. You never know what it can lead to and how you might help lift a burden off of another person.
I have had others help me on this journey and I fully intend to pay it forward. If you’re interested in owning your own business, learn a skill and be GREAT at it.
Next quarter, I am focused on streamlining my internal accounting process, now that I’ve established a solid customer experience.
Here is a two-fold question: What is the book that influenced you the most and how? Please share some life lessons you learned. Now what book have you gifted the most and why?
John Maldonado: Hands down for both– John C. Maxwell’s ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’. This book has a plethora of personal and professional life lessons.
My personal favorite is his ‘Law of Sacrifice’. “A leader must give up to go up”, as the author explains it and it’s very true. I would recommend this book to anyone in a leadership role or even just interested in growing professionally…or personally!
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
John Maldonado: I love this question. This could not be more relevant and applicable to most-everyone today. Everyone I know, from every walk-of-life is experiencing financial struggles in some way or another due to rapid and unprecedented inflation.
This is the real challenge for US ALL. Because of this massive paradigm shift, you have some taking advantage of this and others. I see it every day in my line of work. People don’t necessarily know what they should be paying and know prices have gone up, so they are less hesitant to question it.
Because of this, I know my REAL opportunity for growth is to continue to provide quality services at an affordable rate. Yes, remodeling can be expensive, materials and labor. I know my value and I have to charge for a certain amount, but I refuse to be dishonest or overinflate prices. This is where I know I can differentiate.
In your experience, what tends to be the most underestimated part of running a company? Can you share an example?
John Maldonado: I would have to say marketing and advertising. My trade is in carpentry and home remodeling, so those are the skills I know best.
I have had to learn all of the other pieces of running a business like invoicing and marketing. I have learned that some of these other tasks are just as important to my business, because if you are not generating leads by some marketing activity, than you have no business at all.
Luckily, I’ve also learned the power of delegation in various leadership roles. You can’t be the master of all, so the key is to hire the right person for the things you are lacking or have no business focusing on.
What does “success” in 2023 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
John Maldonado: My goal in 2023 was to really define my business service offerings and create a solid experience for all of my clients. I really do feel like I have achieved that as my business is almost 85% referral and repeat business.
That feels really good. For 2024, my ultimate goal is to get a to place where I can share my skill set and craftsmanship with an apprentice who would like to start his own remodel business one day. I could then help another on their way up and start to spend more time with my family, eventually.
