How to make friends in a new team

How to make friends in a new team

A friendly and calm atmosphere in the team guarantees employees’ successful activity and moral
stability. If you have t o change your place of work and join a new team
(https://anywhere.epam.com/en/blog/functional-testing-interview-questions), we advise you to use these great tips on how to become your own among strangers quickly.

As a rule, both business and friendly relations are formed among colleagues, and some are directly dependent on others. And all together, it creates a high-quality and progressive result of work on a joint project, idea, or campaign. So, how to get to know a new team and make friends with it?

1. Find a mentor

In the first weeks at a new job, it is vital to have a mentor who will help you adapt, learn new responsibilities, and get used to the established rules and requirements of the company. Whether you work as a freelance test engineer or a full-time financier does not matter — this will make it easier for you to understand the company’s mission and values. But don’t overdo it. Such a person should only be a companion, not work for you and make decisions that are part of your duties.

2. Become a team player

Show unobtrusive initiative. During communication, you will feel points of intersection with new colleagues and understand what can connect you — shared interests, habits, and hobbies. Do not wait for a special invitation. Participate in project discussions and share experiences from your previous workplace.

3. Do not compare with the previous team

It is wrong to constantly draw parallels between the new team and the previous one. Instead, look for the positives and advantages in your new environment. Study their rules, procedures, and working methods. Perhaps what seems strange and unusual to you is effective and constructive.

4. Do not expect increased attention to yourself

Remember that you are the one who came to a team that is still unknown to you, so you have to start building a relationship with it. New colleagues do not have to adapt to you.

5. Take advantage of new opportunities

A new team is best to show your strengths and skills and share your experience. Think about how you can be helpful to the new group. After learning your job duties, be ready to expand them if expertise and skills allow. Do not be afraid to be visible, especially if you are confident in your professional qualities.

6. Be polite

You are new, so you should observe politeness and etiquette from the first days. Even if everyone in the team addresses each other informally, you should not do this until new colleagues offer you such a communication option. And maybe they will not. So, stick to standby mode in such situations.

7. Extend friendliness to everyone

To work effectively and successfully at your new place of work, you must first form healthy relationships with colleagues, not with management. Do not exceed the communication limit with the boss more than professional etiquette allows. Otherwise, you will be mistaken for a sycophant.

Building new relationships at work is always tricky. But the attitude of new colleagues in the future will depend on your behavior in the first days.
