We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
Brandon Newman: Hello, and thank you for this opportunity! I just had that surreal moment of hitting 50 years old last month and I had a pleasant experience looking back to assess my past while looking forward to the blank canvas ahead of me.
I’ve been massively lucky to have married the love of my life who was brave enough to bring 5 kids into this world to raise in a wonderful environment where I’ve learned to love the one title that drives all others: Dad.
Outside of the home, I’ve spent the last 30 years neck deep within healthcare technology, pursuing every conceivable pathway towards reducing the cost of healthcare for not only my family and friends but for all Americans. I’ve helped 10 businesses start, thrive, and grow, resulting in some of my greatest business memories.
The last of the ten is Xevant, and it has become my daily focus and passion because it presents the greatest ability to leave a legacy in the world of healthcare.
The company was launched in 2017 as a platform that not only eliminates the need for countless hours of analyzing vast reports but also provides insights and solutions in real-time while delivering immediate savings and improved patient outcomes.
Xevant’s solutions provide automated access to real-time data and insights from dozens of sources that empower healthcare stakeholders to solve the access, quality, and cost issues plaguing the US healthcare system to positively impact over 50 million lives.
In the past year, what is the greatest business achievement you’d like to celebrate with your team? Please share the details of that success.
Brandon Newman: The one stat that keeps me up at night more than any other is the employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS). It is the true opinion of how satisfied all employees are.
After years or working tirelessly towards finding, adopting, and promoting a culture driven by a vision and mission of saving the healthcare system for over 100 million Americans, we finally completed our first employee NPS survey to a very unsurprising but extremely satisfying score of 71.
All of the awards and accolades that our business or executive has achieved pale in comparison to an employee satisfaction score that indicates a very high employee satisfaction, engagement, and empowerment at Xevant.
Culture isn’t just important at Xevant; it is everything at Xevant. The more we trust and empower our team, the more magic we can create through something we call “The Power of We”.
Quiet quitting, The Great Resignation, are an ongoing trend causing many businesses to struggle to keep talent engaged and motivated. Most are leaving because of their boss or their company culture. 82% of people feel unheard, undervalued, and misunderstood in the workplace. In your experience, what keeps employees happy? And how are you adapting to the current shift we see?
Brandon Newman: We see these trends as well and spend countless time discussing how we protect ourselves and our team from falling into that unfortunate trend.
The more we analyze the situation, the more we have come to realize and appreciate that the key to keeping employees engaged and motivated is trust. Employees don’t just want to be trusted to do a job; they want to be trusted and empowered to run their business!
When you really let go, REALLY LET GO, and allow yourself to trust each employee to do what they signed up to do, then we embrace that magical Power of We, and this amazing team that you’ve assembled will go to great lengths to climb every mountain to achieve the success the company needs to achieve because everyone is on-board to run the business – NOT to simply do what you ask.
That is the biggest difference we have seen at Xevant. That culture of trust and letting go at Xevant has served not only our company but also our customers and our entire market as we have seen monumental success, all at the hands of our empowered team.
Online business keeps on surging higher than ever, B2B, B2C, online shopping, virtual meetings, remote work, Zoom medical consultations, what are your expectations for the year to come and how are you capitalizing on the tidal wave?
Brandon Newman: Technology, automation, and the ever-present “artificial intelligence” are not only here to stay, but those who can’t embrace these as integral parts of their businesses and society as a whole will not survive in the near future.
There are far too many people and businesses willing to embrace the power of efficiency gained by letting technology “do its thing” and let humans “do our thing,” and together, we achieve infinitely more than simply trying to do it alone. I was the product of the 80s who watched The Jetsons growing up, always wishing I had those technological luxuries from the future.
Fast forward to today when all of those technologies are already here, and yet here we are talking about how to deploy the tidal wave of technology better. Xevant has had its own evolving thought process surrounding technology, and we are a tech company!
On one hand, we completely appreciate the need to have a people-first culture, but on the other, when technology serves people (not the other way around), we have seen maximum output resulting in optimal success.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as THE real challenge right now?
Brandon Newman: I must be hopelessly cursed by my TV upbringing because I can describe my business philosophy from yet another TV show. On the infamous FRIENDS episode of carrying the couch up the stairwell, Ross incessantly yells out “PIVOT!”
Business ownership can feel exactly like carrying a heavy couch up an impossible stairwell that barely fits and requires near-constant pivots. The proven approach I use to work through business challenges is: Stop, Pivot, Survive, and Thrive.
No business plan is perfect and no business owner is infallible. Invariably every founder, executive, and employee is bound to run into brick walls where we have to have the patience to force ourselves to stop our course as soon as possible, pivot towards a new, well-thought-out strategy, tirelessly work to survive through the pivot, then seek to thrive as long as possible.
Eventually, you will turn the next corner and this will start all over again. The one skill they really don’t teach in business school is the art of survival. Doing whatever it takes to make it another year, month, week, day, or even hour sometimes is the difference between incredible success and becoming another failed statistic.
To me, that is the real challenge right now in a world full of talented and ambitious business people looking to leave a mark, but who are either unwilling or unaware of the crucial and required talent of learning to survive at all cost.
2020, 2021, and 2022 threw a lot of curve balls into businesses on a global scale. Based on the experience gleaned in the past years, how can businesses thrive in 2023? What lessons have you learned and what advice would you share?
Brandon Newman: As much as we saw the healthcare system get crippled by COVID-19, we also saw one of the greatest moments in history as entities, institutions, and people worked together in complete cooperation towards innovative solutions that ultimately addressed the once-in-a-lifetime pandemic while creating solutions that would impact future generations.
I am proud to get to say that Xevant and so many other innovators were an integral part of the solution. For me, it was the first time that we saw thick lines of separation become blurred and erased in the name of solving a crisis.
For the first time, we saw unfettered innovation and technology moving forward at light speed without typical restraint and unneeded legislative action.
Although it would be impossible to relive the last 2-3 years or maintain the same level of output to save lives and businesses, I think we can immensely learn from the process and take key approaches away from the experience to transform how we approach life and business going forward.
What does “success” in 2023 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
Brandon Newman: Success for Xevant means realizing our strategic goals and making a meaningful impact in the healthcare industry. It means delivering innovative solutions that improve patient outcomes, enhance operational efficiencies, and drive positive change in the healthcare ecosystem.
In 2023, I envision Xevant as a recognized leader in the industry, known for our commitment to excellence, integrity, and customer satisfaction. We will have forged strong partnerships with PBMs, empowering them with data-driven insights to optimize their operations and enhance patient care.
Our solutions will be widely adopted, making a tangible difference in the lives of healthcare providers and patients alike. Furthermore, success for Xevant also means fostering a thriving company culture, where employees feel valued, motivated, and empowered.
I believe that a strong team is the foundation of any successful organization, and I am committed to cultivating an environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
