Thank you so much for giving us your time! Before we begin, could you introduce yourself to our readers and take us through what exactly your company does and what your vision is for its future?
William Scott Goldman: Goldman Law Group is a unique, one-of-a-kind business and branding IP law firm.
NO child ever says I want to be a CEO/entrepreneur when I grow up. What did you want to be and how did you get where you are today?
William Scott Goldman: I’ve had quite the interesting career path, discovering a true passion for creating new business ventures back in college while setting up an event production company. Further growing the business during law school, I then started working for a firm and discovered a talent for bringing in new clients, becoming quite the rainmaker while formally organizing the other company into a serious part-time business, decades before anyone ever thought of the term ‘side hustle’. Fully self-financed, it finally grew to the point where the ‘day job’ was no longer needed, and I was then able to leave the law firm in order to begin forming my own. For a long while, I had envisioned a brand new type of law practice focusing on serving the needs of startups and entrepreneurs.
Representing Innovation was the mantra and mission statement that I developed, setting out to offer creative solutions for creative business clients in all fifty states and worldwide with reasonable, flat-fee billing and 24/7 attorney access, essentially disrupting the legal industry. From there I invented the entirely new practice area of Branding Law, publishing the only casebook of its kind and establishing myself as a thought leader in this exciting new field. Of course, this led to the further growth of our firm.
In order to take everything to the next level though, I then sold off one division of the events company, keeping just the talent management component as that ties in better with legal representation for our creative clients. Following our reorganization, I’ve been able to devote much more time to creating new marketing initiatives for both businesses. And the results have been tremendous with another spin-off entity or two planned for 2021 as the true entrepreneur is always dreaming and forever creating.
Tell us something about yourself that others in your organization might be surprised to know.
William Scott Goldman: Please refer to the previous answer as most are unaware of those background details.
Many readers may wonder how to become an entrepreneur but what is an entrepreneur? How would you define it?
William Scott Goldman: Successful entrepreneurs possess undeniable vision. They identify opportunities, break new ground and disrupt industries. As true visionaries, they’re not afraid of taking calculated risks in order to achieve their objectives. Perhaps most important of all, they tend to carry a sense of purpose and unflappable self-confidence, ignoring the naysayers and accomplishing what no one else has done before.
What is the importance of having a supportive and inclusive culture?
William Scott Goldman: Diversity is vital in today’s global economy as it enables a business to better serve the needs of clients worldwide with a greater sense of understanding and common purpose.
How can a leader be disruptive in the post covid world?
William Scott Goldman: Flexibility has always been key to our survival and growth. And this past year was no exception. Recognizing early on that the pandemic would affect various geographic areas and economic sectors in different ways, we decided to expand our focus globally, also reaching out to a wider range of industries, including 24/7 attorney access. As a result, when certain parts of the U.S. and particular regions of the world would see a spike in COVID cases, any consequent declines in demand for our services would be offset by increased demand elsewhere, thus ensuring a consistent flow of business and no interruption of workflow during these challenging times. We now intend to continue with more of the same as we’re perfectly positioned this year and beyond.
If a 5-year-old asked you to describe your job, what would you tell them?
William Scott Goldman: Representing Innovation.
Leaders are usually asked about their most useful qualities but let’s change things up a bit. What is your most useless talent?
William Scott Goldman: Having the ability to memorize complex information that can otherwise be easily looked up was very useful twenty years ago but is no longer necessary in the modern Internet world.
Leadership Styles in Education | Five Ways to Lead in Education
Thank you so much for your time but before we finish things off, we do have one more question. If you wrote a book about your life until today, what would the title be?
William Scott Goldman: With plenty more goals and aspirations to achieve, for now, it would simply be “Work in Progress”. Meanwhile, Branding Law Cases and Materials 2nd Ed. should be ready for release later this yr.
