At the core of top performance lies a deep under- standing of one’s purpose and goals. High achievers are acutely aware of their “why” and are laser-focused on their objectives.

In my work as a military leader, it became incredibly evident that, as I prepared to lead soldiers in combat, being great would not be enough. I needed to be excellent—not in pursuit of excellence, but living in excellence. Lives were on the line.
I had been entrusted with mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. I needed to live in excellence, and so did the men and women who served with and for me.
They deserved it, and so did those who had entrusted their loved ones to our charge. It was during that deployment that I realized living where excellence is my average was not reserved for a combat zone.
It was doable and necessary for every place we spend the most valuable resource we have: our time. We deserve to live like that, and the people who depend on us and the people we love deserve to have that version of us every single day. Through a commitment to living where excellence is our average, we become better at who we are, and that makes us better in everything we do.
