We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.
Michael Mints: I am the V.P. of Sales and Marketing at Grand Homes Corp, and I have been there for 24 years. Even though I love what I do for a living, my passion is Writing, Teaching, and Coaching what it means to be Successful in Life.
My Success In Life is all about creating power in people’s lives, the power they need to dominate their fears about the past, present, and future. I use a strategy that I developed over 10 years while helping my teams be successful.
I enjoy writing and speaking about Success In Life almost as much as I do coaching it.
2020 and 2021 threw a lot of curve balls into business on a global scale. Based on the experience gleaned in the past couple years, how can businesses thrive in 2022? What lessons have you learned?
Michael Mints: There are 3 reasons why businesses survived, and some thrived during 2020 and 2021.
Positive Attitude/ Self-Discipline / A Plan
The companies that survived and thrived refused to see it as something happening TO them. They chose the find the positive. How can we take this and use it FOR our benefit? As a result, they found weaknesses and areas where their thinking needed to change, how to do more with less, and how to motivate their people to rally behind them and make it work.
They also took advantage of some serious self-discipline, both physically and mentally. They woke up every day and made decisions to do the hard stuff, make the difficult decisions, shove the fear behind them, step out from their comfort zones, and do things they had never done before.
More importantly, they sat down and made a plan, set goals, and then worked on the goals and the plan every day!! They learned that you are much stronger than you normally are with a great plan, more excited, and much more confident because YOU know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
If you listen to your inner voice and let it tell you the truth, it will tell you that YOU can do this. People are still living in fear, waiting for YOU, the leader, to step up and lead, guide, and tell them what to do.
The pandemic seems to keep on disrupting the economy, what should businesses focus on in 2022? What advice would you share?
Michael Mints: Have a great understanding of who you are as a business, where you’re going, and what you want to accomplish. Then share that with your people.
Stay positive and upbeat; if you don’t have one, start a morning routine where you put yourself in a positive mindset before leaving for work and keep it all day. Focus on what you do best as a leader and as a company.
How has the pandemic changed your industry and how have you adapted?
Michael Mints: In Sales, it’s almost like we’ve started over. What worked and what the customer expected before 2020 is long gone, and a new set of rules and expectations is in place.
How you connect with the customer has changed; how you do discovery and qualify people has changed. How the customer wants the presentation done has changed, all the way down to how they want to be sold.
If you’ve not changed how you sell, you won’t be successful going forward.
As far as coaching, the most significant change is WHY. Many of the executives and leaders I’ve worked within the past are now asking WHY. Why do I need coaching as if they no longer see the value in coaching as much as they once did, even though great coaching is more important today than ever!
Most of the people I’m coaching today are start-up entrepreneurs, social media businesses, and people in high-end sales.
What advice do you wish you received when the pandemic started and what do you intend on improving in 2022?
Michael Mints: Wow, what advice I wished I had received; that’s a great question. I probably don’t have all the answers because everything I tried in March-May 2020 failed miserably. After all, I was relying on what I knew rather than understanding that what used to work won’t, so now what?
As a result, we implemented entirely new strategies and morphed, learned, and kept trying new and different things until we figured it out. Once we did, we started having massive success.
Selling has changed forever, and those that keep learning and growing will be ahead of everyone. I think we’ve entered into a new era of leaders and leadership as far as success coaching. Over the next few years, I think you will see senior leadership starting to step down or have to step down, and a new wave of leaders will step up and in their place.
Online business surged higher than ever, B2B, B2C, online shopping, virtual meetings, remote work, Zoom medical consultations, what are your expectations for 2022?
Michael Mints: The trend will continue for several reasons, not the least of which is the removal of confrontation from the selling process. Now you can buy anything you want and never have to talk to a sales consultant.
Coaching now will be mainly online; the great news however is that coaching has now opened up to the entire world.
How many hours a day do you spend in front of a screen?
Michael Mints: That depends on my priorities for the day; if I have coaching clients that day quite a bit, minimal in my role as VP of Sales. Over the last 2 years, I have learned that the last 2 hours of every day are SCREEN free! This is how I relax and prepare to sleep well and wake up refreshed and ready to go the next morning!
The majority of executives use stories to persuade and communicate in the workplace. Can you share with our readers examples of how you implement that in your business to communicate effectively with your team?
Michael Mints: I don’t know how to communicate without using stories. I was raised hearing stories at the dinner table and night before I went to bed.
Most of the stories I use to manage and communicate with my sales team of 5 managers and 48 salespeople, and the people I coach all focus on FAILURE. They’re stories about when I failed, how I forgot, and why I failed. It’s amazing when you use yourself as a teaching a coaching aid how the person receiving the story is so much more open to hearing and learning ABOUT failure, learning FROM that failure, and not wanting to REPEAT that failure.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as the real challenge right now?
Michael Mints: Both the obstacle and the opportunity today is people. Finding, training, and keeping the best people. The real challenge for most leaders and businesses is understanding that people don’t want the same things they did before 2020. Life has changed, our mindset has changed, and even my own mindset has changed about what’s important and what I’m willing to sacrifice to have it.
In 2022, what are you most interested in learning about? Crypto, NFTs, online marketing, or any other skill sets? Please share your motivations.
Michael Mints: Believe it or not, I’m most interested in learning and growing my Social Media presence, followers, etc. The motivation… it’s where people and customers will come from.
A record 4.4 million Americans left their jobs in September in 2021, accelerating a trend that has become known as the Great Resignation. 47% of people plan to leave their job during 2022. Most are leaving because of their boss or their company culture. 82% of people feel unheard, undervalued and misunderstood in the workplace. Do you think leaders see the data and think “that’s not me – I’m not that boss they don’t want to work for? What changes do you think need to happen?
Michael Mints: I absolutely do believe there’s a sense of IT”S NOT ME still out there. I know because I’m either hiring or coaching their people.
What changes need to be made is another excellent question. Because what you’re talking about is a major overhaul of the leadership in most companies and a complete change in the corporate mindset about WHY employees are essential to us. WHY we should treat them with respect. WHY we should tell them how appreciative we are for them. WHY we should be as interested in their success as we are our own!
On a lighter note, if you had the ability to pick any business superpower, what would it be and how would you put it into practice?
Michael Mints: The superpower of marketing on Social Media. It’s important because it’s how we communicate today, and Social Media is today what the TV was in the 1950s.
Answering how to put it into practice is a little challenging at the moment because I’m still learning. I have a coach myself who teaches me how to use Social Media to market in a very different way, how we sell, what we sell, and why they buy it.
What does “success” in 2022 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
Michael Mints: I have pretty high aspirations for 2022; I am in the process of completely rewriting how you sell in this new era.
I have a goal of having 100k followers by year-end and doubling my client base.
