How has the significance of networking evolved over the past decades?
Julia Chebotar: Networking has evolved tremendously over the past decades, becoming more dynamic, accessible, and essential for success—especially in the culinary and wellness industries. Previously, networking was largely limited to in-person events, word-of-mouth referrals, and traditional industry gatherings. While those are still valuable, the rise of social media, digital platforms, and content creation has transformed how professionals connect, collaborate, and grow their businesses.
Today, networking is about building authentic relationships both online and offline. Platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok allow entrepreneurs to showcase their expertise, engage with their audience, and forge partnerships across industries. Virtual networking has also made it easier to connect with like-minded professionals globally, opening doors to collaborations that wouldn’t have been possible before. Companies like Second Degree Society are my go-to networking groups!
For me, networking has been a game-changer—whether it’s connecting with brands for partnerships, engaging with other chefs and wellness experts, or building a community of clients and followers who share my passion for health-conscious cuisine. The key to successful networking today is providing value, staying genuine, and embracing both digital and personal connections to create lasting, mutually beneficial relationships.
Can you share a personal story where one networking interaction led to unexpected doors opening, and how it highlights the ripple effect of networking?
Julia Chebotar: Absolutely! Networking has been at the core of my journey from the very beginning. In fact, it was through a networking group that I first decided to become a private chef. I was surrounded by entrepreneurs and professionals who encouraged me to turn my passion for food and wellness into a business. Their insights and support gave me the confidence to step into the world of private dining, and that decision completely transformed my career.
One of the most pivotal moments came early on when I attended a wellness event and struck up a conversation with someone who was passionate about clean, nourishing food. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this person would become my very first private chef client. They loved my approach to health-conscious cuisine and hired me for meal prep and private events.
That one connection created a ripple effect—leading me to celebrity clients, exclusive brand collaborations, and high-profile private events. Through referrals and word-of-mouth, I was introduced to major names in entertainment, sports, and business, all because of that first opportunity.
This experience reinforced the power of networking—not just for landing new clients, but for building authentic relationships that open unexpected doors. It’s a reminder that every conversation has the potential to shape your career in ways you never imagined!
What are some common networking mistakes people make, and how can they pivot to turn potential missteps into learning experiences?
Julia Chebotar: Networking Too Transactionally
Mistake: Only reaching out when they need something, which can make interactions feel inauthentic.
Pivot: Nurture your relationships before you need them. Engage with people on social media, check in occasionally, and support their work. That way, when you do need to reach out, the relationship already has a foundation.
and…
Not Being Clear on Their Personal Brand
Mistake: Struggling to articulate who they are and what they do in a compelling way.
Pivot: Have a clear and concise elevator pitch that reflects your expertise, values, and what makes you unique. Confidence in your brand makes it easier for others to remember and refer you.
Networking is all about building relationships over time. Every misstep is a chance to pivot, refine your approach, and grow. The key is to stay authentic, engaged, and open to new opportunities—you never know where one conversation might lead!
How do you see the future of networking evolving with the rise of AI, VR, and other technologies?
Julia Chebotar: AI is already transforming how we find and connect with the right people. Instead of attending random networking events or scrolling through LinkedIn, AI can analyze interests, goals, and past interactions to intelligently match individuals with potential collaborators, clients, and mentors. This means more meaningful connections and less wasted time on surface-level networking.
I also think that with the rise of VR and AR, networking will no longer be limited to physical events. Imagine attending an immersive virtual food conference where chefs, wellness experts, and brands can interact in real-time, showcase their work, and even host cooking demos—all from different parts of the world. This opens doors for global networking without the travel barrier, making high-value connections more accessible.
