How to Become a CEO Before You're 40

A common question among many aspiring new business owners is “How successful can I be in the next few years?” Business has become one of the most prominent fields ever since the internet made it more accessible. In fact, did you know that there are CEOs as young as 16 to 18 years old? While this is obviously not the norm, you don’t have to be a specific age to run a business. However, becoming a CEO at any age will require a lot of hard work and dedication on your end. We have just the tips to help make the process a little easier. In this article, we’ll be going over how you can become a CEO before you’re 40.

Find the Right Starting Position

Chief executive officers of a company aren’t random people picked from the street. They’re typically people who already have an established background in the field as well as an extensive education on top of it. Sounds a little strict, huh? It does seem like a lot, but think about it like this; would you have someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing run a business? Your first step is to obtain as much knowledge as possible.

This is done by going to college and obtaining a bachelor’s, or master’s for that matter, in business administration and management. The average cost of this degree is around $40,000, but it depends on where you’re getting it. You can, however, save money by going to a marketplace that have partnerships with reputable providers. These providers are where you can shop and compare rates on your student loans, scholarships and even FAFSA. Because college is a big investment, don’t worry about spending as much time as you need.

Earn the Right Credentials

Becoming a CEO is more than simply learning a few business management tips, getting your degree, and working in the field for a little while. This is one of the most competitive positions in the business field, so you want to make sure your resume is filled with accomplishments and educational experience. Furthermore, you also need to be aware of the company’s niche. If it’s an IT company, it’s crucial you know the ins and outs of how it works.

Refine Your Leadership Skills

As a CEO, you’re not just trying to make the company more successful; you’re also in charge of leading your employees in the right direction. You’re not just a leader; you’re the leader, which is why it’s very important that you work on your leadership skills continuously. Here’s a brief list of skills that you need to be the best leader you can be:

  • Negotiation

  • Motivating employees

  • Thinking critically

  • Settling conflict with relative ease

  • Being able to adapt to situations quickly

  • Being an inspiration to those who work for you

These are just to name a few of them, but it should give you a general idea of the skills you need to learn and master.

Build Your Own Personal Brand

CEOs do have the final say in how the brand ultimately functions. It’s a great to personalize your own brand, but make sure to include the employees in the process as well. A sudden brand change can cause a few issues in the workplace.
