As we begin, please share your origin story with us.
Debbie Sutton: Firstly, thank you for allowing me to share our story! One day during COVID, I had come home from a particularly uncomfortable annual mammogram. Troy, my son, researched online to buy a medical device that would relieve my discomfort, however, there was no product on the market specifically intended to relieve female breast pain. So, he invented The Healing Bra™, a patented innovative bra with special therapeutic pads that can be heated in the microwave and/or cooled in the refrigerator or freezer and then inserted into the bra in order to relieve breast pain and discomfort!
What inspired your path on the creation of The Healing Bra? Likewise, what inspired you to embark into entrepreneurship?
Debbie Sutton: Hands down, Troy has been the inspiration! I have always been in one business or another since I was a young girl! After spending time on Wall Street, and a budding singing career, I was recruited to join my family’s small NJ business in Commodity Warehousing & Transportation for many years in Port Newark, NJ. Back in the 80’s & 90’s, I was the only female in the tri-state area in that field, and I grew the business exponentially. After my two sons were born, I was faced with the difficult task of running a large business and raising two boys with a hefty commute in between! I was fortunate enough that I could change hats and become a “stay at home” mom. As many will agree, that is the hardest but most rewarding job ever! I was very involved in their schools, PTA’s, and heading their school’s Cultural Arts programs. Later as their athletics took off, I became the quintessential “Baseball Mom” and am very proud to have assisted them playing all the way to college.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of creating and launching The Healing Bra, both personally and professionally? Do you have a specific moment that you found particularly touching?
Debbie Sutton: Well, as you now know, my son, Troy, was the brainchild for this product. I am most proud of him. I am always impressed when I hear him speaking or writing about The Healing Bra™. Selfishly thinking, I must have done a good job! Launching The Healing Bra™ came at a time when I expected my “business” life to retire! However, this idea was so unique that I couldn’t say no when he asked me to join!
Share some of the key design elements that make The Healing Bra unique compared to other post-surgical bras.
Debbie Sutton: One of the things that makes The Healing Bra™ so special is that it is not just intended for post-surgery, although that is a large audience. The Healing Bra is for all women of all ages, from young women with monthly breast pain, to pregnant women, new moms who are breast-feeding and can really enjoy the benefits for lactation, all the way to pre-menopausal and post-menopausal gals experiencing hot flashes. The Healing Bra is also beneficial to athletes, both professional and amateur, for cooling down, and heating up during various climates and sports.
Through the scaling of the company, what have you learned? What are your aspirations for growth and partnerships moving forward?
Debbie Sutton: This is a new start-up company, so we have had to be quite savvy financially. We are honored to have been featured in places like NJ’s News 12, The NJ Morning Show, and CBS’ Wake Up With Marci, and in several magazines. Eventually, we would like to be featured with the non-profits that we have partnered with, including Shareing & Careing, one of New York’s largest non-profit breast cancer support groups. We are also in the process of having The Healing Bra approved to be distributed by pharmacies as well as physicians & hospitals. We want every woman who needs relief to have The Healing Bra™ in her arsenal. Our aspirations include working with more non-profit organizations and giving back to those women in need.
Are there any future products or initiatives you’re working on to complement The Healing Bra and further support women’s health?
Debbie Sutton: We plan on expanding our product line to incorporate more bra colors and types, such as nursing, post-surgical, sports, etc. Also, we have other products in development specifically geared towards women’s health as well as upcoming partnerships and collaborations that we are extremely excited about!
Balancing business and family can be daunting. What is your favorite self-care strategy to combat stress?
Debbie Sutton: Oh yes, indeed! I believe in self-care in many areas! Exercising in whatever capacity, but yoga, pilates, stretching and walking are wonderful outlets. Friendship is critical! As much as we adore our families, time spent with friends is not only fun, but necessary! For me, eating well and taking vitamin supplements help to keep my immune system strong! Though I do enjoy Rock, Country and Jazz, I find that soft relaxing instrumental music really helps my focus.
What legacy do you hope The Healing Bra leaves on women, the community, and the world?
Debbie Sutton: Our Mission Statement is Empowering Women with Comfort and Confidence. This is the idea and vision for The Healing Bra™. It allows women of all ages to go about their daily lives, whether they’re going to work, running errands, or doing chores, all while alleviating breast soreness. For so long, women’s health issues were not discussed and certainly not advertised or promoted! This is the best time for The Healing Bra™ to come of age!
