How has the significance of networking evolved over the past decades?
Daniela Siggia-Beasant: Over the past few decades, the significance of networking has evolved dramatically. In the past, networking was more about who you knew within your immediate circle—colleagues, local business contacts, or professional groups. Today, it’s become a dynamic and indispensable tool for building relationships on a global scale, thanks to digital platforms and social media.
Networking now goes beyond exchanging business cards at events; it’s about creating genuine connections, sharing knowledge, and collaborating across industries and borders. It’s become essential not just for career growth but also for staying relevant in an ever-changing landscape. The ability to build and maintain diverse networks has never been more crucial for personal and professional success.
Can you share a personal story where one networking interaction led to unexpected doors opening, and how it highlights the ripple effect of networking?
Daniela Siggia-Beasant: One of the most powerful examples of networking opening a substantial door happened when I saw an opportunity for two of my clients to collaborate—one in the advanced materials sector and the other in corporate services. I brought them together and facilitated a strategic meeting, believing their combined expertise could drive significant value. The result exceeded expectations: they formed two new subsidiaries that are now preparing for IPO.
The ripple effect was remarkable. As they began leveraging each other’s networks, new connections were made, culminating in a $1 million capital raise over a breakfast meeting. This experience showed me how strategic networking can spark growth and opportunity in ways you might never imagine.
What are some common networking mistakes people make, and how can they pivot to turn potential missteps into learning experiences?
Daniela Siggia-Beasant: One common networking mistake people make is focusing too much on what they can gain rather than on building genuine relationships. Networking isn’t about making a quick transaction; it’s about creating meaningful connections. Take, for example, the million-dollar capital raise with my two clients—a deal that took five years to come to fruition. I had been nurturing that relationship for half a decade before one client was ready to scale to the level required to be of interest to my other client. It was a long process, but it was worth the wait. That million dollar raise was just the beginning of what looks to be a massive undertaking they are engaging in together.
This experience taught me that not all deals happen overnight; you have to be patient and willing to invest time in building trust and understanding. Networking is about playing the long game and recognizing that sometimes the most significant opportunities come from waiting it out and staying committed to the relationship.
How do you see the future of networking evolving with the rise of AI, VR, and other technologies?
Daniela Siggia-Beasant: Networking is evolving rapidly with the advent of AI, VR, and other emerging technologies. AI is transforming how we connect by providing deeper insights into potential contacts, analyzing communication patterns, and even suggesting who to reach out to and when. It’s streamlining the process, making networking more efficient and targeted. AI-driven tools can also enhance personalization, helping tailor interactions based on data-driven insights, which can lead to more meaningful connections.
Virtual Reality (VR) is pushing the boundaries further by creating immersive networking experiences. Imagine attending a virtual conference where you can engage in lifelike interactions with people from around the world, regardless of location. This technology opens up new avenues for networking that are more accessible, inclusive, and dynamic.
Overall, these technologies are making networking more strategic and versatile. They offer us new tools to create deeper, more authentic relationships across distances and industries, reshaping the way we connect and collaborate. As these tools continue to evolve, I see networking becoming a more hybrid model, blending the best of both in-person and virtual experiences to foster global connections like never before.
