Genetics is a fascinating field, revolutionizing human health and revealing what makes us tick. We see it daily when interacting with the younger generation, as traits like hair, eye color, and blood type are passed down from parents.
However, parenting goes beyond genetics. It involves passing on values like morality, an appreciation of beauty, and offering guidance on the rewards and challenges of life in the 21st century.
One man dedicated to building a better world for a new generation and passionate about providing organizations with the information and advice they need to prosper in an ever more complex business environment is award-winning entrepreneur, business investor and change agent, Chris Allchin.
Sydney-based, Allchin has spent 15 years establishing an enviable reputation as a life coach, public speaker, mentor, executive coach and business consultant. During this time he has also bought and sold around a dozen businesses in multiple industries and has recently launched Allchin Management Private Equity to provide established businesses and startups with the advice and access to networks that they need to reach the next stage of growth.
It’s all About the Information
According to Allchin, parents and business leaders share traits like leading by example and passing on lessons learned from experience and information.
“My parents, like most, were well-intentioned but sometimes lacked the information needed to prepare me for success. Business leaders can face the same issue, focused on strategy but limited by the quality of their information,” says Allchin.
Allcin’s experience managing various businesses has given him valuable insights and a strong network, which he is eager to share with clients.
“Every entrepreneur or business leader is different. Some are motivated by wealth, others by improving the world. I’m somewhere in between,” says Allchin. “I aim to create generational wealth and give my children the knowledge to become better people and leaders. I apply the same philosophy to my advisory services—providing leaders with actionable information that equips them for success.”
The Recipe for Success
According to Allchin, there are Four Golden Rules that every business leader should follow in order to ensure that they are at the forefront of getting their organizations to pole position in the race for competitive advantage.
Says Allchin, “Almost every business owner can read a balance sheet, and the best of the best have the discipline to ensure that they are operating at 110% at all times. But often that discipline disappears when the going gets especially tough. It’s difficult to focus on the fundamentals when you’re facing a crisis. In times like that, you need to have the comfort of a structured approach, and I’ve found that internalizing these ‘Golden rules’ can make the difference when the going gets tough.”
1. Embrace Authenticity
For Chris Allchin, authenticity is the foundation of success. “Get to know yourself, recognize your strengths and weaknesses and live your aspirations, even if it’s in your head. If you have a mental picture of yourself as a successful businessperson, and you’re willing to devote yourself 100% to reaching that dream, you’ll make it. But you need to take concrete steps, otherwise, you’re just wasting the most precious asset you have – time.”
2. Build a Strong Team
Allchin believes success comes from surrounding yourself with talented people who align with your vision. “The key is hiring people smarter than you,” he advises. “Don’t try to be the smartest in the room; leverage others’ knowledge.” He warns against hiring those who simply validate your decisions: “Surrounding yourself with Yes Men is a path to disaster. Energize your team with a shared passion, which is one of the greatest motivators.
“While teamwork and passion are essential, a fresh viewpoint can be crucial. External advisors who share your strategy and passion can help focus leaders and teams, offering ideas that might otherwise be missed.”
3. Commit to Discipline
Discipline is central to Allchin’s daily routine. “I’m up at 5 AM, hitting the gym, following a strict routine,” he shares. For him, discipline is about consistency, not motivation. “Doing the hard things, even when you don’t want to, is key to success.”
He challenges the belief that success can come without discipline. “Most successful people plan with purpose, break down their goals, and get up early.”
4. Practice Gratitude
Gratitude shapes Allchin’s mindset. “I start each morning by listing three things I’m grateful for,” he says. This practice has shifted his focus from chasing big goals to appreciating everyday moments. “When you’re grateful, it’s hard to be angry. It puts you in a positive frame of mind, and that positivity translates into greater levels of energy, and that can be infectious. ”
Progress Over Perfection
Allchin’s journey highlights that success is fueled by progress, not perfection. Through authenticity, assembling a strong team, maintaining discipline, and practicing gratitude, he has transformed obstacles into opportunities. His experience demonstrates that with the right mindset, anyone can achieve their goals.
“I’ve had my ups and downs, but focus and dedication can make all the difference to your mindset. Be wary of demanding immediate perfection. In our current, fast-moving business environment, a good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow, but always strive to improve. It’s a process of lifelong learning, but always remember, as Michael Jordan said, ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’”
Chris Allchin concludes with one final piece of advice for business leaders – have faith in yourself. And have the courage to make your dream a reality.
Allchin says, “Recently I facilitated a 15 million dollar loan for a business that I was advising, a $200k commission was offered, but that wasn’t why I was there, I wanted a seat at the Boardroom table. The business saw the value and now I’m part owner in that larger company. Three weeks later I structured an even better deal. Know your worth, and focus on the long-term.”
