Before we begin, please share the “cliff-notes” version of who Audrey Davis-Dunning is.
Audrey Davis-Dunning: I’m an African-Dancing, stand-up comedy loving, foodie who believes that ALL WOMEN ARE GODDESSES!
Tell us about your journey of founding Get Your Goddess. Was the inspiration gradual or did it transpire within a specific moment?
Audrey Davis-Dunning: Get Your Goddess was founded out of a series of repetitive conversations that I was having with very accomplished, powerful and beautiful women. I noticed a theme emerging. Despite all of the magnificent things they had going for them, there was always a comment that spoke to a feeling of them “not being enough”. It happened time and time again. I knew I wanted to create something to interrupt that pattern. That’s how Get Your Goddess and the Goddess Principles were born.
How do you define the concept of being a Goddess, and how does Get Your Goddess help women embrace this concept in their lives?
Audrey Davis-Dunning: I always share the GET YOUR GODDESS definition of a GODDESS with all of the women. Embedded in the definition are the five Goddess Principles of POWER, BEAUTY, MOVEMENT, MUSIC & ACHIEVEMENT.
I tell them to grab at least one principle a day and use it to keep their Goddess energy up!
In a world devoid of joy, Your book, “KUCHEZA! The Basics, Beauty & Power of African Dance,” and the online African Dance course offer a wonderful, joyful opportunity. What motivated you to create these resources, and what impact do you hope they will have?
Audrey Davis-Dunning: People need something they can put their hands on and reference. I made sure to make it colorful and easy to read, yet full of the vital information that they need. With my online course, it allows women to have 24/7 access to me at their fingertips! They can play the online course at their convenience and go through it at their own pace.
You balance being an educator, motivational speaker, and Mom-preneur while running Get Your Goddess. What tips and strategies do you have to balance it all gracefully?
Audrey Davis-Dunning: Ha! Ha! Balance it all gracefully! I don’t know about that! But what I will tell you is that every day has its own particular priority! I like to identify my top three things to do for the day. My big ticket items, so to speak! They tend to be things that will move my key agenda forward. I focus on getting those done. Anything beyond that is a bonus! Whether it’s done with grace and style or it gets a little rough and rugged… GODDESSES GET IT DONE!
How do you hope the power of African Dance will transform lives?
Audrey Davis-Dunning: One of my favorite sayings is, “AFRICAN DANCE WILL GIVE YOU LIFE!” The vibrancy and power of the movements change your mood, your energy and overall vibration!
I view African Dance as an empowerment tool. It can be used to entertain, educate, bring joy or heal a broken heart.
Actually, that was my entry point into African Dance. I was brought to a dance class by a dear friend after I had undergone a major break up. My heart was broken. In an attempt to cheer me up, my friend took me to an African Dance class led by Yewande Kelley Johnson. I fell in love with those ancient steps! Yewande became my primary African Dance teacher, and I’ve been doing African Dance ever since!
Share a success story or two from those who have traveled through your programs, whether they be Get Your Goddess or KUCHEZA!
Audrey Davis-Dunning: In terms of African Dance, I had a woman dance with me who had given up dancing. She thought that she was too mature, not fit enough and would feel out of place in a dance class.
Well, once I got my hands on her, her whole perspective changed! She gave me the biggest hug after class and said she never felt so loved, so free and so powerful! She said I made her believe that she could dance again! She felt so good about herself and what she had learned that she performed the choreography for her friends and family! I was elated! I love it when my students take African Dance and share it with the community. That’s how we keep the tradition alive!
One of the most memorable moments from one of my Get Your Goddess clients is the breakthrough she had about looking at herself in the mirror. Prior to her Get Your Goddess training, she never looked at her whole body in the mirror. She didn’t love or appreciate her body.
After she completed her training with me, with tears rolling down her face, she exclaimed, “I can look in the mirror! I can look in the mirror! I can look in the mirror and I love what I see! Thank you!”
That moment brought me to tears as well.
It was confirmation that I’m living and working towards my purpose!
