AJ, thank you for joining us today. Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us about your roots and what brought you to the United States?
AJ: I was born and raised in Sri Lanka during a tumultuous time. The country was amid a civil war, which made life challenging and uncertain. In 2006, I made the difficult decision to leave my home country and move to the United States. It was one of the hardest choices I’ve ever made, leaving behind family and friends, but I was driven by the hope of creating a better future for my partner.
I can still remember how strange it felt stepping off the plane as a student in a foreign land with just a suitcase to my name—both nervous and excited about what lay ahead. Now, 18 years later, I’ve been blessed with the American dream.
That must have been an incredibly challenging transition. How did you manage to adapt to life in a new country while worrying about those you left behind?
AJ: You’re right, it was a real struggle. Every day felt like living in two worlds. On one hand, I was trying to build a new life here, learning the ropes of a new culture and system. On the other, my heart was constantly back in Sri Lanka, especially during times of unrest.
My stomach would drop every time I heard news about violence back home. I’d be glued to my phone, desperately trying to get in touch with my parents, just to hear their voices and know they were okay. Those were some sleepless nights.
But that worry became a powerful motivator. I realized I couldn’t just sit around feeling anxious and letting things outside of my control control me. So, I channeled all that worry and fear into determination. Every challenge I faced here became a chance to prove myself and show that the faith my family had in me wasn’t misplaced. That drive became the foundation of my work ethic and, looking back, I can see how it shaped my entrepreneurial spirit.
How did your experiences shape your journey to becoming a business owner?
AJ: My background taught me resilience and adaptability. Coming from a war-torn country, I learned to see opportunities where others might only see obstacles. This mindset proved invaluable when I started my own business. Before KallistoTech, I worked various jobs to support my family. The idea of starting a business was always in the back of my mind, but it took a surprising turn of events to make it a reality.
Can you elaborate on that unexpected turn of events?
AJ: It was December 2016, just days before Christmas. I had a newborn at home, and I received the devastating news that I was being laid off from my job. It was a gut-wrenching moment, filled with fear and uncertainty. But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. My friend Ravi and I have been doing some freelance web design and branding work. It wasn’t a lot of work initially, and the income was definitely on the “ramen noodle” side of things. But we loved the work, and the dream of building a better future for our families fueled our hustle. We figured this would be our side hustle forever.
However, in that moment of crisis, we decided to turn our side hustle into a full-fledged business. I owe a lot to Ravi, as my co-founder. He was always a believer that we could chart our own destiny, and he gave me the last bit of confidence to go all in—that’s how KallistoTech was born. Starting with just branding and websites, we’ve expanded into a full-service marketing agency. We now offer everything from SEO to mobile apps, and we’ve grown KallistoTech into one of the leading digital marketing agencies in Florida.
"Our success relies on positive feedback from our clients, and we didn’t want to lose that."
Talk about making lemonade out of lemons! How did you manage to get KallistoTech off the ground so quickly?
AJ: It was a combination of desperation, determination, and a bit of luck. We already had a small network of satisfied clients from our freelance work. When we decided to go all-in, these clients became our biggest cheerleaders. They were happy to refer us to others, and suddenly we had a growing client base. We also worked around the clock, taking on any project we could get our hands on. It wasn’t easy, but failure wasn’t an option for us.
It’s amazing how quickly things seem to have fallen into place. What would you say were some key milestones in those early days?
AJ: As we grew, we expanded our team, bringing on talented individuals initially from Canada and now all over the world. We even set up an operations office in Canada, which allows our team to deliver for our clients in the U.S. In 2020, we were honored to receive the Small Business of the Year Award from the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce.
One of the projects we’re most proud of is the work we did for Aspire Tour, setting up their digital and community apps and infrastructure that helped them grow into America’s largest business tour and secure a $73 million valuation in early 2024.
Each of these milestones felt like validation that we were on the right path.
"I’d say resilience is key. The journey will be tough, and there will be moments when you question if it’s all worth it. But if you stay focused on your goals and keep pushing forward, the rewards can be tremendous."
KallistoTech has come a long way since its inception. What can clients expect when they work with your agency? Can you share any success stories that highlight your impact?
AJ: At KallistoTech, our main goal is to help our clients thrive online and grow. When they come to us, they can expect a partnership where we’re genuinely invested in their journey. We see ourselves as an extension of their team, working closely to find the best solutions for their unique needs. We’re proud to say we’ve helped some clients grow by 17% after revamping their websites and improving their SEO. That’s not just a number—it’s real-world impact.
We keep things friendly and open, focusing on what truly matters to our clients. Whether it’s building a website, boosting search rankings, or crafting custom mobile apps, our team brings fresh ideas and perspectives to every project.
What do you think sets KallistoTech apart from other digital agencies?
AJ: We’ve worked hard to develop an efficient approach to project management and client communication. We’re big believers in proactive communication, so we make sure our clients are informed and involved at every stage of the project. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small website redesign or a massive e-commerce overhaul; we provide a dedicated project manager for every engagement.
Our project managers aren’t just there to tick boxes and send reports. They’re constantly checking in with clients, gathering feedback, and making real-time adjustments. We’ve also invested in a project management tool called Clickup, which we’ve heavily customized. It gives our clients full visibility into their project’s status, timelines, and deliverables. This level of transparency helps build trust and makes everyone’s life easier.
What challenges did you face as your work expanded?
AJ: One of our biggest challenges was keeping up the quality of our work as our client base grew. When more projects started rolling in, we quickly realized that just taking on everything wasn’t going to cut it. Our success relies on positive feedback from our clients, and we didn’t want to lose that.
So instead of stretching ourselves too thin and risking the quality we worked so hard to build, we decided to expand our team. That was a game-changer for us, and we never looked back. Bringing in new talent allowed us to handle the workload without compromising on what we deliver.
Speaking of your team, you mentioned you’ve built quite a varied workforce. How does this contribute to your company’s success?
AJ: Coming from Sri Lanka, I knew there was a world of talent out there that many people in the States hadn’t considered. I know this has changed in recent years with more people working with VAs and team members outside the USA, but we capitalized on it early on. We now have team members in the U.S., Canada, South America, India, the Philippines, and of course, Sri Lanka.
This diversity allows us to approach problems from different angles and come up with innovative solutions. Plus, it reflects the global nature of the digital world we operate in. Our diverse perspectives and cultural insights have been key to our ability to understand and serve a broad range of clients.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those from immigrant backgrounds?
AJ: I’d say resilience is key. The journey will be tough, and there will be moments when you question if it’s all worth it. But if you stay focused on your goals and keep pushing forward, the rewards can be tremendous. And don’t be afraid to lean on your support network, whether it’s family, friends, or mentors. Sometimes, just knowing someone believes in you can make all the difference.
Another thing I’d add is to embrace your background. Your unique experiences and perspectives are your strengths, not something to be downplayed or hidden. They can give you an edge in understanding diverse markets and coming up with creative solutions. Lastly, don’t be afraid to take risks. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that some of the best opportunities come from the most unexpected places.
You’ve built a successful business, and you’ve also given back to the community. Could you share more about your philanthropic efforts?
AJ: Giving back is deeply important to me. I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life, and I believe it’s my responsibility to help those who are less fortunate. That’s why I’m involved in supporting local schools through donations to the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber. I also donate both time and money to children’s homes in the area.
But it doesn’t stop there. I also work with families back in Sri Lanka who are struggling to make ends meet. I know what it’s like to live in uncertainty and fear, and I want to do my part to alleviate that for others. Whether it’s providing dry rations, books, or writing materials, every little bit helps.
Your story is truly inspiring. As we wrap up, what’s next for you and KallistoTech?
AJ: Thank you! We’re always looking ahead, so there’s plenty on the horizon. For KallistoTech, we’re focusing on expanding our services even further. We’re constantly exploring new technologies and digital marketing strategies to ensure our clients stay ahead of the curve.
On a personal level, I’m committed to continuing my philanthropic efforts. I’m also looking at mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs, especially those from immigrant backgrounds. I want to share what I’ve learned and help them realize their dreams. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone else succeed, and knowing you played a part in that journey.
